MARKET INFORMATION
School System:
Silverton is the single incorporated town in San Juan County, Colorado.
Therefore, the school district is headquartered here, and classes are
provided locally for preschool through twelfth grade. In order to take
advantage of our naturally small class sizes, the school has adopted an
Expeditionary Learning curriculum along with more than 100 other schools
in the nation. This curriculum allows for experiential learning to be the
curriculum focus and for students to utilize the world at large as their
classroom. This experiential learning philosophy is on the cutting edge of
education, and we are proud to offer it here in our small town.

Home Market:
The homeowner market is divided roughly 75%-25% between seasonal and
year-round residents. Although the second home market in the region is
vigorous, the first home buyer market is also growing. Commercial
properties are generally closed during the winter months, leaving open
only those that serve the winter market. However, the advent of a
backcountry ski area (the first of its kind in the U.S) increased
wintertime visitation considerably last year. The summertime population is
about 4,000, while in winter is drops to 500.

Employment Market:
The economy of Silverton was historically based on the mining industry.
With the last mine closing in 1991, a shift began to take place away from
mine speculation toward the seasonal tourism industry. Although this
transition has not been easy for Silverton, the economy is showing signs
of a revitalization. New homes are being built, new businesses opened and
many entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the internet to bring the Înew
economyâ to the San Juans. Silverton is also a natural home to artists,
writers, and other creative individuals whose livelihood does not depend
on their location. The population of four year olds jumped seven fold from
2002 to 2003, which indicates that Silverton is becoming home to young
families who seek to raise their children away from the problems of larger
towns and cities.
